Value of Pechersk Lavra Monastery- hard to overestimate

Once you are in Kiev city don’t miss opportunity to visit Pechersk Lavra Monastery. And here are some reasons Why you should see it!

Found in 1051 it is one of the biggest and oldest orthodox monasteries in Eastern Europe – a real shrine for Christian believers and pilgrims. On the territory of Lavra there are numerous active churches and two great cave coplexes with the relics of great  saints.

But beside being a greatest regigeous center it also has enormous cultural, cocial, architectural and historical value. At the beginning of 17 century here was opened a printing house that got fame not only in Russian Empire but also all over the Europe. Here were typed books, manuals, dictionaries, class-books, calendars on six languages including Polish and German!  In the 18th century here was opened a great public library where everyone might come to study. And metropolitans invested money for opening schools and allowed folk to use their own books for education.

The area of monastery covers 28 hectares and counts 144 constructions. Its territory is located on two hills – higher and lower ones devided by ravine. The higher hill is a historical and culture preserve with the museums, exhibitions and main architectural sights. Most popular are museum of miniatures and museum of historical treasures. The lower hill accommodates famous caves, school of theology, academy, monastic cells, warehouse and economic section of the monastery.

Lavra is surrounded by the rampart with six fitted-in watch towers and two churches that also serve like the entrances. One of those churches – Trinity Church – is kept safe and came till modern times from the beginning of 12th century.

In general the vast territory of Monastery with its unique contructions representing different eras and styles, wide squares and narrow streets creates unique architecture ensemble – one of the greatest in the World. And beautiful landscapes and views make this areas very enjoyable for walking to every visitor.
